EUPHORIA S2 E1
‘Euphoria’ Season 2 Episode 1: Trying To Get Into Heaven Before They Close The Doors
(SPOILERS)
Hiiii babies!!
My first euphoria “review” is here, keep in mind I am not a journalist or professional writer. I am simply sharing MY thoughts and opinions. This post might be on the long side because I am going to add a season one recap to refresh the mem. I'm so excited to jump into episode one, season two premier with you, from my thoughts/predictions on character development, new fashion, soundtrack and of course the drama!
Season One: Recap
Since 2019, we have been waiting patiently for season two and it is finally here. I've never missed a show so fucking much. This show has made its way to stay relevant 2 years after its first season and many season two filming delays. Euphoria has become a full aesthetic in itself and now LED lights and glitter hit different. Season one's fashion and soundtrack really stuck with its audience. It was something different that we were getting and Labrinth’s Euphoria soundtrack made everyone really feel a part of the show and in the moment. Trust me, the amount of times I have listened to the Euphoria soundtrack on a nightime drive home is absurd. Labrinth has a way of making every song on the track make you feel like the main character and that is a feeling this generation clings too.
Euphoria soundtrack + night drive = main character
The season one finale left off with some cliff hangers, not knowing how Mouse was going to handle Fez getting raided and then handing him blood money, had everyone on their toes for season two. Rue is coming into the new school year trying to handle all the whispers of her summer overdose, after struggling to stay clean after overdosing, she meets Jules and her love for Jules becomes stronger than her love for drugs. All in season one, her main reason for being sober was for jules and that amounted to a lot of pressure being on Jules. Jules feelings for Rue had everyone confused, did she want to be just friends or in a relationship? Granted the amount of pressure she felt being the only reason Rue is sober, while also dealing with the harsh blackmail she was getting from Nate and her desire to conquer femininity all at once. This was all too fucking much for her and I think we all knew that the moment Jules left on the train without Rue, Rue was going to relapse. As for Nate, he was shown as abusive, manipulative and secretly coming to terms with his sexuality. Being the popular high school boy, he wants to have it all but can’t shake his fathers secret life and his attraction to Jules/the opposite sex. He hates his father but he is becoming him and that is resulting in a lot of anger and violence with anyone that comes in his way. Maddy finds herself in an abusive relationship with Nate and no matter what he does, she knows she will stay and still love him and that scares her. Cassie has some serious daddy issues, she has spent all her life trying to feel love from guys and they have fully taken advantage of that. However, she falls in love with Mckay and he falls in love with her but he can't seem to let go of her past and that results in a bunch of petty fights between them. Mckay is a freshman D1 football player that realizes he isn't the best football player on the team anymore, he feels out of place in college and his ego gets bruised by not fitting in and being benched on the football team. Cassie finds out she is pregnant and ends up getting an abortion, this icident makes her want to stop making mistakes and focus on herself. Kat has always been insecure about her weight and would shy away from guys because of it but in this season she loses her virginity and realizes weight has nothing to do with it and that a confident woman can conquer anything and anyone. Lexi is the supportive friend and sister to all, her character is more on the back burner in season one. Lexi comes off as shy and nerdy but in the last episode we see her being curious and more interested in guys. Season one was loved by many and It's going to be hard to top. Now that we are all caught up with season one, let's get into season two episode one.
S2: Episode 1
Right away, I can tell this season is going to have a slightly different vibe to it. Still with the same iconic Euphoria aesthetic but the film camera they are using to shoot with (Kodak Ektachrome motion picture film) is giving off a warmer tone, rather than cool tone like season one and it is also looking more vintage. I have read in another article that Sam Levinson, the director wanted season two to feel like a high school memory and much less in the moment like the previous season did and I got that vibe right away. There was no better way to start the season two premier than with Fez’s story, his grandma was a fucking G and seeing she wasnt the best guardian to him and Ashtray, she was better than the parents they were dealt with and they were grateful for that. I was always curious about Fez’s scar and it was nice to know the storyline behind it but I ended up finding out that his scar is not something that was made for his character, it was the actor Angus Clouds scar and the director decided to incorporate it into his story. To be honest, I was shocked that it was his grandma's business. I really thought that he was just taking care of her and started his own drug dealing business to take care of her and ashtray but finding out that he took over her business made me like him more. FEZ & LEXIIII, I love this duo and the concept of her liking someone who is a complete opposite from her is something that is going to make this season so GOOD and dramatic. I mean their whole conversation made me feel all warm and fuzzy and it was pretty obvious that she was feeling the same way. They both deserve love and their characters were both alone and were less seen in season one so for them to end up with each other and get more screen time would be amazing. I am totally for it. However, you can tell that she gets nervous with what she's feeling about him when she sees him beat up Nate, I wish he didn't do it infront of her because I think it's going to give her second doubts about him but I think he had to do it infront of everyone to show that he's not taking shit from anybody and he wanted everyone to know that. Nowwwww, Nate needed that ass beating, I felt so relieved when it happened and he definitely needed to be put in his place. What goes around, comes around and all of last season it felt like Nate was invincible and was getting away with everything he did. So I’m glad he is finally suffering consequences, he deserved it alone for fucking cassie and then getting all riled up on Mckay like that, that was weirddddd. As for Fez, I LOVE that he is forreal doing shit like his grandma, he is not letting anybody fuck with him and it’s good for him to be like that if he is going to move up in the business. I am scared for him though this coming season, I can tell shit is going to go down. Nate and Cassie wasn't a shock to me, I feel like that girl really needs to put herself first and I thought she was really gonna do that when she realized she kept making mistakes and not learning from them but then she made another one!!! I really think Nate was just bored without Maddy and saw Cassie right there and felt like she was good enough or close enough to Maddy. OR I have a weird theory that he just wanted Cassie because he knows she's been with Mckay and he wanted to fantasize about Mckay in some way because the way he was asking Mckay all about his business with Cassie seemed like he would be one to do that. The whole situation was so funny because Cassie only felt bad when she got caught up, she can blame being drunk too but if she realized how much trouble she was in while maddy started knocking on the door “drunk” then she knew exactly what she was doing. PLUS she sobered up real quick after that whole situation but I am glad she let Mckay go, I don’t think we’ll be seeing a lot of him this season. I'm just saying at that moment she deserved that rag being thrown on her. LMAO. I think she is really gonna fall in love with Nate even more so than she was with Mckay and they are going to continue hooking up or they both are going to fall in love with each other hard. I’m sure Cassie is going to find herself trying to portray Maddy’s personality FOR Nate. BUT I will say that the whole car scene was really hot but she did NOT need to take off her whole ass underwear, she knew what she was doing at that moment and Maddy is 100% going to find those in Nate's car. Speaking of that car scene, this is where I realized the soundtrack was going to be a little bit of a different vibe too. I noticed that they used a lot of the same theme songs that they had in season one but in terms of new songs I feel like it's going to give off that old school chill vibe. To me the song “Dead At Night by Orville Peck” really sounds like 70s/ early 80s soft music. Someone who I think really fits this type of music genre is Lana Del Rey. I can guarantee that they are going to use one of her songs this season and I really hope it's from her “Born To Die '' album but I wouldn't be surprised if she writes a song for season two. Now moving on to Rue, right in the beginning we see that she had relapsed and not in a “only one time to get my craving out” way, you can tell that this time she doesnt feel bad about doing it and there is no fear or remorse to her relapsing, she's going full out and she's happy about it. With addicts, it's always one step forward three steps back so I am not surprised that she is taking a couple steps back, I feel like we are going to see that a lot in this series. BUT, while she and Faye are waiting in the car I feel like we are seeing her future. It shows when she finds Fayes left over heroin in the car and decides to do it, in that moment she decides her fate. I think we are all scared for Rue and this episode just kinda threw her off the deep end, heroin is a type of drug that can just take one time to get addicted too and I believe that she is going to start experiencing harder drugs with her new friend Elliot. She is getting comfortable with these drugs and is really testing her limits, I mean she is literally bringing herself out of cardiac arrest! At some point I feel like she won't be so lucky. I do really like this new Elliot character and Dominick Fyke does a great job playing him and I'm sure his music will be in the season. He and Zendaya's characters have chemistry right off that bat and I can tell he is going to become a new love interest for Rue. I can see her and Elliot try to help each other get clean at some point in the season. In all honesty, Rue and Jules are getting boring. Jules has a lot of things she has to deal with herself and it makes her too confused with Rue. Jules has always messed with Rue’s feelings and I really think that when she finally makes her mind up about being with Rue, it is going to be too late and it won’t work out. I do feel for her though, I am sure that seeing Rue’s relapse was hard and she probably is feeling like her leaving is the reason she relapsed and that makes her feel guilty. I don’t want to think too much into the kiss of them at the end because in season one they would kiss all the time and then Jules would be in love with someone the next day. Lastly, Kat and Ethan are so fkin cute. I am so happy that they are together and trying out their relationship. I feel like they are going to be on more of the back burner this season, not sure why I think that but I do. I am so pumped for the rest of season two and can’t wait to really see where it takes all the characters and if we will end up getting a season three.
Top 3 Fashion Moments
Fezco + Fezco’s grandma
Fez’s fashion in season two I think is going to be more simple but elevated than it was in S1, he was seen wearing a green palace cable knit sweater and it made him look clean asf. As for his badass grandma, we see her wear an ICONIC royal blue suit with nothing under it that really showed that she was not her to play and that's exactly what the customer designer was going for.
Maddy:
Everyone's favorite Euphoria fashion icon. I think Maddy’s style is going to stay pretty much the same but she is definitely going to be setting new trends. In this episode she is seen wearing a little black cut out dress with black long gloves. THIS is a new years dress, a statement!! The costume designer had come out in an article and said that she is wearing black to mourn the relationship between her and Nate. Showing she is ready for something new. Her silver hoops, “Maddy” necklace and glitter shadow really pulls it all together. Let’s not forget her strappy gorgeous thigh high Amina Muaddi sandals.
Cassie:
Cassie is simple yet sexy, her style is like putting together something from your closet but absolutely nailing it. Her nails really caught my eye, and I will be recreating them! She has a line down each nail with gems and a natural base. Look out on my Insta for my nail inspo! She looks so bomb in the “House of CB: 'Ella' sky blue printed ruched organza mesh mini dress”. It really fits her style, however, like I said before, I think she is going to start to copy Maddy’s style to try and impress Nate. I’m sure we all saw her gorgeous white Prada mini heels, that the costume designer says were to bring out her “angelic” side after not doing a certain angelic thing (sleeping with her best friends bf).
